Anatomy of the rectum and anus:The rectum is located at the bottom of the large intestine in astraight section, about 6 inches in length. Whatever is absorbedthrough the wall of the rectom, it goes straight to the systemiccirculation, circumventing the liver and the portal circulation. Thisis why this route could be compared to the IV delivery. From the rectumthe stool passes through the anus, the opening at the lowermost end ofthe digestive tract, through which it is finally excreted. The internalsphincter and the external sphincter, two muscles at the bottom of theanus, must relax in order for stool to be evacuated.

Detoxaminintroduces EDTA directly into the rectum and the suppository should begently pushed over the two sphincters. Some people prefer to administerthe suppository after a bowel movement and even use a disposable rubberglove (or the middle of a disposable, plastic "sandwich bag") to pushthe suppository over the sphincters. Remember, that the blunt end ofthe suppository goes in first and NOT the pointed end. This ensuresthat the sphincters would further push in the suppository as itcontracts.
